What Makes Bentley Unique?

With Admitted Student Day right around the corner, prospective students and parents are eager to ask questions and gather more information about what the school has to offer. It's a busy time on campus, but an exciting one too, as we get to share what makes Bentley unique and special. Bentley University is a private university located in Waltham, Massachusetts, that distinguishes itself from other colleges and universities in the state with its unique characteristics. While the average college or university in Massachusetts has a slightly greater female-to-male student ratio, a left-leaning political atmosphere, and a relatively large student-body population, Bentley stands out in various ways:

One of Bentley's distinct traits is its gender distribution, which is slightly male-dominated. According to US News, in the fall of 2021, we had a gender distribution of 61% male students and 39% female students. This is not uncommon in engineering, technology, and business schools, which are predominantly male. This imbalance in gender distribution can have a significant impact on the social dynamic and experiences of students.

Bentley University is one of the few right-leaning schools in Massachusetts. As per Niche, 60% of Bentley students would describe the political atmosphere of the university as "conservative." When speaking with students, most would describe themselves as “socially liberal, fiscally conservative”. This is not surprising given that although MA is a left-leaning state, business schools are often associated with right-leaning ideologies. Many business students and faculty members prioritize free-market principles and entrepreneurship. The curriculum in business schools typically focuses on topics such as finance, economics, and management, which are traditionally associated with capitalist ideals and individualistic values.

Bentley University is also unique in terms of its small size, with a total undergraduate enrollment of only 3,996 in the fall of 2021, according to US News. This small size provides students with personalized attention in the classroom and a tight-knit community. Using Erdős number, it would take only 12 steps (or connections) to reach any other person at Bentley University through a chain of acquaintances, highlighting the university's interconnected community.

In addition, our campus is located in a small suburban area, which is in contrast to most colleges and universities located within a city or a walkable distance from other attractions. Although it may be an isolated campus, the campus size of 163 acres makes it possible for students to always be in sight. The small but beautifully landscaped campus shows off the university's affluence and provides a peaceful and focused environment for students to study and learn.

Bentley University is also known for its business focus and incorporation of liberal arts ideas into several courses so that students can relate business analytics to common world problems. Even non-business classes incorporate business in some form, and the curriculum is designed in a way so that the skills learned in IT will help in accounting, and the skills learned in accounting will help in microeconomics and so on, serving as a great occupational benefit.

In conclusion, Bentley University offers a distinct and valuable college experience with its personalized attention, tight-knit community, right-leaning political leaning, small size, interconnectedness, suburban location, and business focus. These characteristics make the university stand out from other colleges and universities in Massachusetts and provide students with unique opportunities for skill development and occupational advancement.
