Typing or Handwriting?

With technology becoming more common in the classroom, students are often given the choice between handwriting and typing their work. This raises the question: is typing or handwriting more effective?

For people who are good at both typing and writing, typing is faster than writing. According to Word Counter, a person on average types 38 - 40 words per minute. Typing leads to more words on a page, which can be beneficial in some cases. For example, writing a lengthy paper would be more easily written by typing.

However, when taking notes, writing on paper is better. For some, taking lengthy notes helps with learning the information. On the other hand, taking brief notes enables you to retain information better. Regardless of the length of notes, physically writing out something allows you to remember the motion of your hand, which helps memorization. This is because when we take notes, we create spatial relationships between the information we are recording.
