As Halloween just passed, I wanted to note some of the best costumes I saw on social media or in person. To me, it seemed as if this was one of the most creative years, as Gen Z seems to be straying away from cute to humorous costumes instead. In no particular order, here are my top ten favorites from this Halloween season.
Heidi Klum: Over the years, she has become known for her all-out costumes. Some of her more notable ones were when she cloned herself and hired models to look and dress like her, being a worm, and Princess Fiona from Shrek. This year, she wanted to
Justin and Hailey Bieber: The media noticed how Hailey and Justin Bieber never look like they are attending the same event. In early September, Hailey was seen in a glamorous red dress and heels, while Justin wore a grey hoodie. This became a joke on social media, and many duos dressed as the two this Halloween.
Hailey Bieber: Over the past few months, Hailey has been accused as a “mean girl” for bullying Selena Gomez. This especially sparked after Taylor Swift posted, “So sorry my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game.” The feud between the two was created mainly by fans, and both Selena and Hailey made statements about the so-called feud. Selena supposedly spoke to Hailey and said, “Hailey Bieber reached out to me to let me know that she was receiving death threats and such hateful negativity. This is not what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop.” As with all social media frenzies, this one died out over the weeks. By Halloween, it was not talked about. Hailey posted a photoshopped movie poster with her face on all the main characters. Many see this as a “power move” and have respected her decision to pose as a mean girl for Halloween.
Barbie: Over the summer in July, the Barbie movie hit theatres, and people of all ages went to see it. The movie starred actors and actresses such as Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrera. This movie was wildly successful, surpassing one million in revenue, and talked about for the majority of the summer. With such popularity, it was assumed that people would be a version of Barbie this Halloween. There were many costumes based on the movie. Whether it was weird Barbie, just Barbie, or Ken, in my opinion, any Barbie-related costume I saw, I loved. Overall, I feel that many people did not opt to be Barbie as they thought it would be overdone and that everyone would have this idea. However, I think many people thought this, resulting in not that many Barbie costumes this year.
Eras of Will Ferrell: On TikTok, a video went viral of a group of friends that dressed as Will Ferrell from different movies such as Elf, Stepbrothers, and Barbie. This was an uncommon and funny costume for friends to go out in.
Statue of Liberty: One of my friends decided to purchase a Statue of Liberty costume for this Halloween. When she told me about this, it immediately reminded me of the Wendy Williams episode where she scared the audience and staff when she fainted in a Statue of Liberty outfit. Despite this, when I saw my friend in this costume, I thought that it was a great idea and was definitely a costume that you see often. While not exceedingly common, I have seen a few other Statue of Liberty outfits, including celebrities, and found all impressive.
Moira Rose: Moira Rose is a main character on the CBC hit television show Schitt’s Creek. This show aired in January 2015 and has gained many fans. Prior to Halloween, I constantly talked to one of my friends about how to dress as Moira, who plays the mom of the family the show’s plot is based on. She works as an actress with crazy outfits and even has a closet of wigs. A key part of her character is the original and unique clothes that she wears. With her one-of-a-kind outfits, it makes a great Halloween costume. Although I chose not to do this costume, I saw many online that I thought that all the costumes were well composed.
Gatorade Bottles: Tiktok account @antoni12887 posted a video of eight girls dressed as Gatorade bottles. This video has 1.3 million likes and 6.8 million views. They had on orange swim caps and a solid-colored one-piece with the Gatorade logo tapped on. Additionally, they had the plastic that comes on drink packs around all of them to keep the eight bottles connected. The comments on the video loved the idea. Some users say, “This is so funny I would’ve never thought of this,” “Should’ve been this,” and “I literally laughed out loud 10 across the board.” I agree with the comments and think that this was truly a costume I had never seen before, and I thought that it looked creative and fun.
@Toystorydad_: This is a TikTok account of a family where the parents post a costume of one of their kids every day in October. I saw this account for the first time when I saw a video of their daughter desperately wanting to be a chair for Halloween. On Halloween, it was shown how she went trick-or-treating as a pink chair. This year, the most successful costume was Ticketmaster. The daughter wore a sign with the Ticketmaster logo. This was a TikTok video, and the caption was, “Have you seen anything scarier than trying to get tickets from Ticketmaster and dealing with all their fees.” People thought that this was adorable and funny. For months, Ticketmaster was scrutinized as tickets to the Taylor Swift Eras Tour were hard to get and overpriced.
Refrigerator: @Lauren Hunter on Tiktok poster a video of her as a fridge. The doors opened, and her face stuck out from one of the shelves. When the doors were open, the fridge was filled with food. Also, the outside of the fridge was decorated with magnets and pictures. Some of the comments on the video were, “You win best Halloween costume forever. Wow,” and “OK, I didn’t expect this one at all. It looks so real tho!”
Overall, Halloween is a great time of year as people can channel their inner child and dress up. People love the opportunity to wear costumes and create long-lasting memories with their friends and family!
