Soul: A Great Children’s Movie with Poignant Lessons for All

The sound of smooth Jazz could be heard floating across lower campus last weekend with TNT’s outdoor screening of Disney and Pixar’s newest movie, Soul. The movie is centered around a middle school band teacher named Joe Gardner and his lifelong quest to play jazz music professionally. When Joe falls down a manhole cover, his body ends up in a coma. But, his soul ends up in the Great Beyond, where souls are made, and personality is assigned. Audiences follow Joe and his new friend, a soul named 22, as they attempt to reunite Joe’s soul with his body in time for him to make his jazz performance debut. The movie is filled with humor, fantastic music, and a star-studded cast featuring Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Angela Bassett, and more. Although geared towards children with cute sidekicks and silly antics, people of all ages can find something to enjoy with this movie. Underneath the animated characters and somewhat complex division between life and death, are messages for every audience: Don’t ever stop doing what you love, and never take life for granted. Soul reminds viewers of just how short life is and that Joe’s second chance at life is rare. Appreciating the little things in life and treating every day as if it is your last are messages we all need to hear now and then, and Disney gives us just that. Overall, Soul is a cute movie packed with jazz tunes and reminders to live life to its fullest because you never know — one day you could just find yourself hearing the song, but not listening to the notes.
