Sadness, anger, and frustration followed a mass shooting in Georgia targeted at members of the Asian American community that killed eight people at three Atlanta-area day spas last week. Six of the victims were of Asian descent, including the owner and operator of one of the spas, several employees, and a customer having a couples massage with her husband. The shootings follow a dramatic rise in hate crimes against members of the Asian American community throughout the past year.
President Biden and Vice President Harris met with Asian American leaders in Atlanta. Both condemned the attacks, with the President urging Congress to pass legislation to pass the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which would allow the Justice Department to respond to the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans throughout the pandemic.
