Shabbat Dinner Co-Hosted by Hillel and Greek Life

Friday, March 24, Hillel co-hosted Shabbat dinner with Bentley’s Greek life organizations on campus. This event was thoroughly planned out however, 48 hours before the event, there were many challenges. One of the biggest was a location change. Originally, Hillel had booked the Cube in the Hockey Arena. However, it was accidentally double-booked, and the location had to be changed to the Sacred Space.

As attendees continued to show up for Shabbat dinner, space was limited. Tables filled up quickly. However, more chairs and seating opened outside the Sacred Space, and people could be seated. After everyone was seated, prayers were said over the bread and the wine.

Blessing over the bread (Hamotzi):

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-alom ha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz.

Blessed is the Oneness that makes us holy and brings forth bread from the earth.

Blessing over the wine (Kiddush):

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-alom bor-ay peri ha-gafen.

Blessed is the Oneness that makes us holy. Blessed is the Creator of the fruit of the vine.

Afterward, people were invited to grab food.

They had food catered by Kosher Wok and the Butcherie. Kosher Wok is located in Brookline and Hillel has been catering to them for a while. Chinese food is cooked and sold under the supervision of Rabbi Aaron Hamaoui. Hillel ordered trays of lo mein, sesame chicken, chicken and broccoli, egg rolls, and white rice. Additionally, they had four trays of sushi ordered from the Butcherie. This restaurant is located in Brookline as well and has diverse menu options. It was opened in 1972 by Max and Jack Gelerman, and over the years, it has grown into New England’s Premier One Stop Family Owned Kosher Supermarket.

This event had the largest turnout of the year, with around 100 attendees. Having it co-sponsored with Greek life organizations allows for an increased number of participants. This event was successful, with a high turnout, excellent food, good conversation, and more. Hillel is grateful for all who attended and hopes to be able to continue hosting successful events like this one. Hillel looks forward to upcoming events such as Passover and Field Day!
