The Premier League concluded its fourth match week this past Sunday, involving a “Super Sunday” clash between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Man. U. suffered an embarrassing 6-1 defeat, one that started with Bruno Fernandes converting a second-minute penalty to give United the lead, but quickly devolved when Spurs managed to turn the game around in only seven minutes. Spurs then added salt to United’s wounds by scoring two more in the first half and another two in very quick succession at the start of the second half. United captain Harry Maguire, once reliable for his team, was nowhere to be found during the match.
This dramatic loss created some new records for United. It is the first time in their history to concede four goals in one half at Old Trafford. This is also only the third game that United conceded six goals in its 140 years of history. After this game, Spurs climbed up to sixth place on the league table, two points away from a champions league position. After this forgettable performance by United, however, they now sit in an unfamiliar sixteenth place. Interestingly, this match was the second time that former United coach, José Mourinho, returned to his former club; both times ended with a victory for Mourinho.
Compared to United, the reigning champion of the Premier League, Liverpool had an even worse match week. Last Monday, Liverpool suffered a 7-2 defeat at Villa Park as Dean Smith’s Aston Villa demolished the defending champions. In the first half, Ollie Watkins’ perfect hat trick and John McGinn’s volley left Liverpool trailing 1-4. English stars Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley scored another three goals in the second half to make the score 7-2.
This game also created many notable records. Liverpool suffered its third seven-goal defeat in its history after a similar 7-2 defeat against Spurs in 1963. With this emphatic home victory, Aston Villa now sits in second place in goal difference ahead of international breaks. This is vital for the club, as they were fighting in the relegation zone last season. Meanwhile, Liverpool has dropped to fifth place in goal difference.
