ChatGPT was launched on November 30, 2022, with ChatGPT 4 following in March 2023. The latest version provides increased accuracy and faster response times to users, along with enhanced image capabilities. GPT 4 is available for a monthly fee of $20 through ChatGPT Plus, but it can be found free using Bing Chat. This increased accessibility raises concerns in the educational system.
A big challenge associated with ChatGPT lies in the potential for students to submit copied work. This can be detected when the ChatGPT output does not accurately address prompts or exceeds the content covered in class. Tools like ZeroGPT can also catch this since there is a significant distinction between human and AI writing. Unlike humans, AI lacks randomness / perplexity of the text and has a low variability in sentence structures.
The influence of ChatGPT and generative AI goes beyond the educational system. With AI detection tools, Sports Illustrated, CNET, and G/O Media have all been caught using AI. USA Today has faced accusations, and BuzzFeed controversially revealed plans to incorporate AI in its posts. This raises concerns about the credibility and accuracy of news. If news is solely generated by an AI model, it may lack the journalistic integrity found in articles written by human journalists.
Within the legal framework, OpenAI's terms allow users to reproduce text generated by ChatGPT during conversations, yet publishing these outputs may entail legal consequences, including copyright infringement. Despite its capabilities to write interesting news articles and do so much more, ChatGPT is not a substitute for the critical thinking and analysis necessary for higher-level learning.
