In Matchweek 22, Manchester United put 9 goals past 9-man Southampton, equaling the biggest ever goal output in the Premier League set by them in 1995 against Ipswich Town.
Southampton was already down one man after 79 seconds, when their debutant, 18-year-old Alex Jankewitz, received a straight red from his challenge on Scott McTominay. Manchester Utd. was in total control after this. Wan Bissaka and Marcus Rashford put United up 2-0 after the 28th minute. Rashford’s dangerous play then turned into an own goal for the Saints in the 34th minute and Edinson Cavani upped the goal tally to 4 only five minutes later. The second half did not get any better for Southampton. Anthony Martial’s superb control bagged him a goal in the 69th minute, and McTominay got in the action with a long-range effort in the 71st minute. In the 87th minute, Bednarek fouled Martial and gave away a penalty, which Fernandes converted in the 88th minute. Only three minutes after winning the penalty, Martial got on the score sheet again in the 90th minute, followed by a stoppage-time goal by Dan James that ended the miserable 90 minutes for Southampton.
This is the second time that Ralph Hasenhuttl, manager of Southampton, was on the wrong end of a 9-0, following their infamous defeat against Leicester last season. With this result, Manchester United became the team with the most goals scored this season in the Premier League with 46 goals.
With this result, Manchester Utd. goes to second in the table with one more game played than Manchester City, the league leader. Southampton dropped to 12th place, 2 points behind, and with one game in hand on Arsenal, who played the Wolves with 9 men this week, due to two red cards in the game.
