On October 17, the Premier League entered its fifth match day, during which an important clash between Manchester City and Arsenal took place at Etihad Stadium. In the 23rd minute, Man City’s Raheem Sterling gave the Manchester club its lead and ultimately secured their victory. Arsenal had a lot of chances as well, as the host had a hard time killing off the game. However, City’s Ederson made multiple crucial saves to deny Bukayo Saka and Pierre Aubameyang. Arsenal also gave a debut to their deadline day signing Thomas Partey, though it was not enough for the team to get that equalizer.
Manchester City’s performance this season had been concerning until this point. They only got four points in their first three Premier League games. The win over Arsenal made them jump to tenth place, with a game in hand. If they win their next game, they could potentially jump to a joint third position with Liverpool as they have the same goal difference. Arsenal, meanwhile, is sitting on 9 points after five games played and sitting on fifth place, one point above Tottenham Hotspurs with the same amount of games played and a tie on points with the last Champions League spot holder Leicester City, only trailing on goal differences.
Westham United also stunned the home side Tottenham Hotspur when they grabbed a last-minute equalizer. Spurs seemed to have put the game beyond doubt inside the first quarter of an hour when Heung Min Son scored after just 45 seconds played, and Harry Kane scored two in quick succession right after. Westham picked up its pace in the second half, however. With 10 minutes to go, they got two goals back thanks to Fabian Balbuena and an own goal by Spurs’ Davinson Sanchez. In the fourth minute of extra time, Argentinian Manuel Lanzini put in an absolute screamer from outside the box - Hugo Lloris got a hand to it, but couldn’t prevent it from going in.
After this draw, Spurs is still searching for their first home win this Premier League season. Westham, however, is only one point behind Spurs sitting in the ninth position and is only two points away from a Champions League position. This match is also Welsh superstar Gareth Bale’s first return to the Premier League after seven years in Madrid; however, Lanzini’s stunning goal took the spotlight away from him as the Welshman is still searching for his first point back in the Premier League.
