Chelsea had some great chances too. Romelu Lukaku hit the back of the net but it was ruled offside first, and Mateo Kovacic’s brilliant effort was deflected wide. The deadlock was broken in the 53rd minute as Gabriel Jesus’ slingshot found the back of the net, giving the Citizens a deserved lead.
This game marks Pep Guardiola’s first win against Tuchel. After this game, both teams have 13 points with 4 games played. City just edged out Chelsea, taking the second spot by goal difference. However, they have a difficult week ahead as they will face PSG in the Champions League midweek and Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. For Chelsea, they definitely need to pick up their pace after not landing a single shot on target against City. Midweek’s Champions League competition sees them going to Torino facing Juventus, and they will be back at home for Southampton this weekend.
