It’s October in March: Drake Blesses Us with a Surprise Bundle

I probably should not say that the three songs released by Drake a few weeks ago were a surprise strictly because they were a surprise to me, but I did not hear about him planning to release them when he did. There had definitely been rumors swirling about an album with an expected title of Certified Lover Boy (I know, not sure why he was going with that) releasing back in December, but I had not heard anything in months. He titled this small grouping of songs Scary Hours 2 which consists of features from Lil Baby and Rick Ross.

The one track without a feature is called “What’s Next” and it had been leaked on YouTube and Tik Tok about a week before the bundle’s release. This may have been what caused the sudden release. Not sure what it is about that song, but it is easily one of my favorite upbeat Drake songs. The pre-chorus is unbelievably catchy as he flows effortlessly over a simple electronic keyboard melody. He has several impressive lines throughout the track as well. In the second verse he says “I put a skirt on a whip and a crown on the six but there’s no need to dress up the numbers.” Not sure if he came up with that as there have obviously been speculations about him having ghost writers in the past, but I love that line. He is boasting about the popularity he has brought to Toronto and his success in music. This was easily my favorite song from the bundle.

The next track is called “Wants and Needs” and features Lil Baby. This is the most popular song from the song, debuting at number two on the Billboard Top 100 chart. The highlight of this song is honestly Lil Baby. Just when you think his verse is about to end, he continues to float over the Cardo production. The verse ends abruptly when Drake comes in singing on the chorus, a really strong performance and probably the best part of the song for him. I would not say that he was carried on this track by any means, but I was certainly more impressed with Lil Baby’s performance here.

The last track is “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” with Rick Ross. This is yet another track where the two of them rap long verses over a vocal sample, very similar to that of “Gold Roses”, a track off of Ross’s Port of Miami 2. There is really not much to say about this track; both of them do their thing as this energy switch was an interesting way to close out the EP. You will probably not hear this song in the same type of environment where you would hear the other two. This is a great track to casually listen to when you want to relax and hear a couple of legends talk about a chicken wing flavor.
