Benzema and Mbappe Strike to Hand Blues the Nations League Trophy; Bottas Wins Turkish Grand Prix

The final of the Nations League took place at the San Siro Sunday afternoon. Mbappé’s late goal completed his redemption for Euro 2020 and made France Nations League Champions.

The opening half of the game had very few highlights. Pablo Sarabia fired a shot in the 12th minute but was easily covered by Lloris. His teammate Oyarzabal, on the other hand, struggled from France’s very physical defense. Spain had a potential penalty due to Rodri’s cross, resulting in a handball in the box, but VAR denied the Spaniards to open the scoring. In the 43rd minute, Raphael Varane suffered a thigh injury and had to be replaced by Dayot Upamecano. The Spaniards were able to capitalize on this substitution. In the 64th minute, Sergio Busquets fed Oyarzabal a lovely through ball and the latter dribbled past Upamecano to put it past Lloris. While Spain was still celebrating, Karim Benzema produced a stunner as the ball bent from the penalty area over Unai Simon’s fingertips in the 66th minute. In the last 10 minutes of the game, Mbappé found the back of the net after an initial offside call by the VAR, sending Spain back home with only the silver medal.

Although his late goal was filled with disagreement, Mbappé completed his redemption as he missed a crucial penalty in Euro 2020 as Switzerland dumped France out of the competition. Spain will face Greece in the World Cup qualifier on November 11, while France will try to book their spot on November 13, playing Kazakhstan in Paris.

On another note, Valtteri Bottas won the Turkish Grand Prix. It is his first win this year and his 10th career win. Two Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez took 2nd and 3rd.
