Arsenal Dents Spurs’ Top 4 Hope with a Second-Half Comeback

In match week 28, Arsenal took on Tottenham in the North London Derby at the Emirates. Erik Lamela’s beautiful rabona in the 33rd minute gave the Spurs the lead. Later on in the game, Martin Ødegaard and Alexandre Lacazette completed the comeback for Arsenal as Lamela was sent off via two bookings.

Even without their captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal dominated the majority of the first half, with Emile Smith Rowe and Cedric Soares both hitting the crossbar. However, the gunners were behind in the 33rd minute when the substitute Erik Lamela produced an exquisite rabona that drilled past Bernd Leno to find the bottom corner. Arsenal’s hard work was finally rewarded in the 44th minute when Ødegaard converted Tierney’s cut back. The host then took the lead in the 64th minute as Lacazette converted from the spot after being fouled in the box by Davinson Sanchez. Spurs’ afternoon went completely sour after the first goal. In the 76th minute, Erik Lamela was sent off for his second foul of the day. Harry Kane, who had his first header disallowed by VAR, hit the post with his freekick.

After this result, Spurs are outside of the top four in seventh place with a 6-point gap to fourth place Chelsea. Arsenal, who won their first North London Derby since December 2018, still sits in 10th place, but are only 4 points behind Tottenham and 7 points behind fifth place West Ham United in a European football position, who has a game in hand.
