A woman named Alessandra was waiting to show her apartment to the next potential tenant Wednesday afternoon. A normal afternoon quickly turned exciting after Alessandra found out her visitor was the president of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
President Mattarella, who is 80 years old, said in May that he would like to have some proper rest after his role as President comes to an end. Before becoming the President, Mattarella served as the Minister of Education, Minister of Defense, and the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court. During that time, he and his wife lived in a house in the center of Rome. When he was elected as the President in 2015, he and his family moved to Palazzo Quirinale. Now, he needs to find a new apartment by the end of the year and officially move out from Quirinale to end his seven-year presidency.
Growing up in Palermo, Sicilia, Mattarella told the press that he has no intention to buy his own property in Rome. So he chose to rent an apartment relatively close to his children. He did not abuse his privilege as the President to go apartment hunting or visit homeowners at night to avoid prying eyes. The President obeyed COVID regulations like all citizens without any priority access. After the restriction was lifted, he contacted a real estate agency himself and made an appointment to go check out the apartment.
So, on that normal Wednesday afternoon, Mattarella and his daughter showed up at Alessandra’s doorstep. According to the agency, the apartment is between Villa Borghese and Villa Ada, the most expensive area in Rome, with a rent of €18 per square meter. Although the President had not yet decided if he wanted to rent, he nevertheless took a picture with Alessandra and her family.
Mattarella will formally leave office on January 31, 2022, and the election will begin on February 1. According to multiple outlets, the next President is very likely to be Mario Draghi, current Prime Minister of the Republic and former head of the European Central Bank. Another notable name in the race is former Prime Minister and the owner of AC Milan, Silvio Berlusconi.
