Amazon has always prided themselves on their strong employment rates, and their development with the communities they serve. Amazon provides jobs for thousands of people, and with Amazon’s competitive benefits, many people are happy to work for them. However, Amazon has recently done something absolutely unprecedented for the company. During Amazon’s busiest season, the winter holidays, sources are now claiming that the company plans to lay off over 20,000 people: a 10,000 increase from their previous estimate. For some context, according to ComputerWorld, “Twenty thousand employees are the equivalent of about 6% of [Amazon’s] corporate staff, and about 1.3% of Amazon's total 1.5 million-strong workforce including global distribution center and hourly workers”. If these numbers hold true, it will be the largest layoff in the company’s history.
As one can imagine, the atmosphere at Amazon warehouses and corporate offices is incredibly tense. While Amazon has confirmed that there will be layoffs, the number of layoffs is still up for speculation. This poses the question: is the ambiguity of the number of layoffs a bad thing, or a good thing for Amazon worker productivity? Productivity and efficiency are staples of the Amazon brand, and is there any greater motivator than the threat of job loss? Many Amazon workers may feel as though working hard is pointless due to the inevitable layoffs. However, it’s possible that the truly motivated workers will push themselves to outperform their previous productivity. If this is the case, then the holiday season is the best time to see which workers are able to do the most for the company. Amazon has a lot to consider going into 2023, and we can only hope that we don’t have 20,000 job losses to start off the New Year.
