A Mbappé Master Class

The Champions League round of 16 started right after Valentine's Day weekend. In a very highly competitive game between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, the wonderkid Kylian Mbappé puts Messi in the dust with a hat-trick as PSG beat Barca at the Camp Nou in an empathic 4-1 victory. Pochettino’s PSG has a big advantage going into the second leg of this fixture.

The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute as Messi converted a penalty from Frankie De Jong. Five minutes later, Mbappé responded with a power strike to the roof of the net to get that crucial away goal. The game was then in a stalemate until the 65th minute when Mbappé found the back of the net again from a deflection. Only 5 minutes later, the Italian national Moise Kean headed home PSG’s third away goal. Pochettino’s side rounded the night off with a brilliant counter-attack which completed Mbappé’s hat-trick.

At only 22 years of age, Kylian Mbappé became the second player ever in the history of the game to score a hat-trick against Barcelona at Camp Nou, and the first since Ukrainian legend Andriy Shevchenko for Dynamo Kyiv in 1997. With this hat-trick, Mbappé also became the third top goal scorer for PSG and the third French player with the most goals in the Champions League alongside Zinedine Zidane, a phenomenal achievement considering his age.

Barca needs another incredible comeback at Parc Des Princes if they want to go through to the next round, four years from Barca’s astonishing victory in which they recovered from a 4-0 first leg loss in Paris by winning the second 6-1 at the Camp Nou.
