A Long-Awaited Merseyside Derby Victory at Anfield

The reigning Premier League champion Liverpool hosted another Merseyside Derby against Everton this past Saturday afternoon. Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s goal gave Don Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton its first derby victory at Anfield in 22 years, while giving Liverpool its fourth consecutive home defeat.

Richarlison gave Everton the perfect start when he found the back of the net just three minutes into the game. Liverpool’s lack of creativity worsened as their captain Jordan Henderson got substituted off for a groin injury. Sensing their opponent’s great stress, Ancelotti brought on Dominic Calvert Lewin to join Richarlison up top. This gamble paid off as the Englishman won a penalty against Alexander-Arnold in the 85th minute. Sigurdsson stepped up for penalty duty, and the Icelander converted it like usual to seal off Everton’s first win against Liverpool since 2010 and their first win at Anfield since 1999.

Liverpool, on the other hand, suffers from major defense and midfield injury, as well as the lack of finishing and creativity. This season, they have a goal conversion rate lower than Fulham. This statistic manifested in the second half of the game when Mohamed Salah missed a one on one with the goalie. Liverpool’s fourth consecutive home defeat equaled their worst record set in 1923, and now they are level on points with Everton, with the latter having a game in hand.
